Cats are mysterious creatures. You buy them a cozy, thoughtfully designed heated cat bed, expecting gratitude, but instead, they climb into the cardboard box it arrived in and declare it their new throne.
Welcome to Weekly Notes #1, the first entry in my new series where I document everyday moments, questionable shopping decisions, and amusing realizations. And what better way to kick things off than exploring the great cat bed paradox—why do I keep buying things my cats ignore?
I Tried Making My Own Cat Mat (Spoiler: It Failed)
Before I even considered buying a heated cat bed, I thought, why not make one myself? So, armed with some old t-shirts and some misplaced optimism, I attempted to create the perfect DIY cat mat.
It was soft, familiar (surely that counts for something, right?), and cost nothing. My cats used it once or twice, briefly entertaining the idea that I had made something worthwhile. But in the end, they abandoned it for yet another cardboard box, as if my efforts had merely been a temporary amusement.
At that moment, I realized cats do not care about effort—which is probably why they love package boxes over plush beds.
Do Cats Even Need a Heated Cat Bed?
Despite my DIY failure, I still found myself looking at actual cat beds, wondering if my senior cat, Mimi, might appreciate something warm and cozy.
She’s 20 years old, and while I have no scientific proof that warmth improves a cat’s life, humans constantly talk about blood circulation and staying comfortable with age, so why wouldn’t that apply to cats too?
If I were to get one, I’d look for something self-warming, easy to clean, and with a non-slip bottom—something designed for senior cats like Mimi, even if she ultimately chooses the floor instead.

A Plush, Faux Fur Cat Bed—Because Aesthetics Matter
Not all shopping decisions are based on necessity. Sometimes, you buy things simply because they look good—which is why I was tempted by the Cat Beds for Indoor Cats Faux Fur Pet Mat in a beautiful orange shade.

Why Do I Keep Buying Things My Cats Ignore?
At the end of the day, cats don’t care about price tags or product features—they’ll always prefer a package box or a random cozy corner over an expensive purchase.
But that doesn’t stop us, their hopelessly devoted owners, from trying to find the one bed, mat, or cushion they might actually use. Maybe one day, Mimi will prove me wrong and curl up in a heated cat bed, but until then, the cardboard box remains undefeated.
